Phil misses out on World No. 1 after Sunday collapse
World Golf Championships | Written by BigRedOh, Phil glad you didn’t burst the bubble this weekend then what would we write about next week when you win the PGA and take over 1st place in the world.
I could dwell on the negative of the Bridgestone but why? Barely making the cut, Phil could not keep up with Ryan Palmer, Sean O’Hair and Hunter Mahan breathing down his neck. However, the fact that Lee Westwood “disqualified” himself for an injury and Tiger opened the door to the opportunity, maybe it was too easy? Maybe he didn’t’ think he had to keep up with Sean, Ryan and eventually Hunter to make a go of it but really the fire wasn’t there. Never have I seen Phil ever finish +9? Really ever? Sorry but I have never seen this and I’ve been watching 10 years! Hunter made a gradually significant rise to the top, much the same as any real champion has done, and he did what he had to do to make it to the top.
And well worth it – Hunter’s 6 under round made him more than worthy! Ryan Palmer defending his 2nd place standing with professionalism that abounds. And who knew that Retief would wind up only in 3rd place? Everyone in the top 5 (Ryan, Bo and Sean) deserves kudos for stepping up the game and maintaining their level of stability.
Phil has to make the fairways and make the putts- something he didn’t bring to the game this weekend-if he does in Wisconsin, then there’s no question who will reign as #1 by August 15th – come on Phil – you have it – bring it!
